SOLIDWORKS rebuild error — what does it mean?
A red X or yellow triangle in the FeatureManager means a feature can't rebuild. Right-click it → What's Wrong. Usually a sketch lost its reference (an edge or face you changed), so fix the dangling dimensions and relations (Display/Delete Relations) and rebuild with Ctrl+Q.
SOLIDWORKS mates not working — the assembly won't move or goes red
Red mates or a (+) in the tree mean the assembly is over-defined; a component marked (f) is fixed and won't move. Use MateXpert to find the conflicting mate, delete it, and right-click → Float for parts that shouldn't be fixed.
My SOLIDWORKS sketch won't extrude
The contour is open or crosses itself. Tools → Sketch Tools → Check Sketch for Feature finds the gap or overlap; Repair Sketch fixes small ones. To extrude only part of a sketch, pick the region in Selected Contours.
Why does my fillet fail in SOLIDWORKS?
The radius is too big for the geometry next to it. Try a smaller radius, fillet the larger edges first, or use FilletXpert to find which edge is the problem.
How do I fully define a sketch?
Blue lines are under-defined, black are fully defined. Add relations (Horizontal, Coincident, Tangent) and dimensions, anchor the sketch to the origin, or use Tools → Dimensions → Fully Define Sketch.
How do I check for interference in an assembly?
Evaluate → Interference Detection lists every overlap between components. Use Clearance Verification for minimum gaps, and fix the mates or dimensions that cause each one.
How do I make an engineering drawing from a part?
File → Make Drawing from Part, drag in the standard views, then Insert → Model Items to bring the model's dimensions across. Add section and detail views, and fill in the title block in the sheet format.
How do I get the mass of my part?
Right-click Material → Edit Material to set it, then Evaluate → Mass Properties. Check the units under Document Properties → Units so the mass matches what the brief asks for.
I can't open a SOLIDWORKS file — it says it's from a newer version
SOLIDWORKS can't open files saved in a newer release. Use the same version as your lab, or ask for a STEP file, which opens anywhere (without the feature history).
Circular or linear pattern fails
Every instance must still be valid geometry. Check the axis or direction you picked, reduce the count or spacing, or switch to Geometry pattern for simple features.
How do I make an exploded view?
In the ConfigurationManager, right-click the configuration → New Exploded View, then add steps by dragging components. Animate it with Animate explode, and show it in a drawing view through the view's properties.
My SOLIDWORKS assembly is really slow
Open it with components Lightweight or in Large Assembly Mode, suppress parts you're not working on, and turn off RealView and shadows.
My sheet metal part won't flatten
It needs sheet metal features (Base Flange) or Convert to Sheet Metal, with one consistent thickness. Then use Flatten in the Sheet Metal tab.
